Alternate Perception

Natural disasters verses self deprecation?

Let's say you're watching television and you're watching flood victims on that television.

now what does a flood do to you if you get flooded?

"Your stuff gets wet dumbass."

Uh, not quite. Your stuff gets wet with raw sewerage that is mixed in with the flood water, your stuff gets caked with mud & slime & dirt & bacteria & salmonella

Your stuff gets turned to rotten hamburger.

The rugs need to be replaced - most of your furniture needs to be replaced - look at your couch - it's gone, you lose power - everything in your fridge is gone, the fridge probably corrodes - replace that too...

clothes?

Are you going to wear clothes that have been caked with mud & slime & dirt & bacteria & salmonella & resemble rotten hamburger?

"Maybe"

I suppose if you replace your now useless washer and dryer and wash your clothes, you might be able to wear most of them. They'll only be good to clean the house in or mow the lawn - maybe go to the gym...

you could pack sandbags in them too.

Anyway, are you with me so far?

Now lets say you wanted to experience what it's like to lose everything you own... would taking your playstation and smashing it against some rocks let you really experience what it is like to loose something? Even on a very small scale?

No.

Not at all.

You chose to destroy your own stuff. You had a choice and instead of donating your game console to the Salvation Army or Good Will or whatever name of place takes things no one wants anymore but are worth something to others, you smash your game against a rock.

It's just not the same.

If you really want to experience what it's like to lose something or someone you care about, just wait. Use patience - because terrible things happen to all of us all the time.

Just give it time.

You or someone you know will get into a bad car accident.

there will be tornadoes and hurricanes

there will be another earthquake

someone close to you is going to die - someday

it's just the way it is,

but unfortunately we can't always get what we want when we want it and unfortunately that even applies to sudden death and destruction.

about the only misfortune you can choose to experience is the unfortunate problem of not having anything go wrong in your life - assuming you like that sort of thing...

anything else you do to yourself is self deprecation - and while noble in some regards it's just stupid to start along the road to feng shui leaving a pile of broken crap behind you destined for the landfill

when in reality you could have made some little kid's day if you waited and gave your junk to someone who wanted it...

now you're just warm, dry, happy, and out a game console.

Poor you.
