johnpowers - How to start a poetry reading

I keep seeing more and more requests for advice on how to start a poetry reading or a slam. To me this means we all need to do the world a favor and come up with a good solid check list, a bunch of quotes, an article, call it what you want, but we need to discuss it and I'll compile it and make it available to all. So... How do you start a poetry open mic? How do you start a poetry slam?
